Two-market identity · Istanbul

Logo design Istanbul: one business, two sets of customers.

An Afghan-owned business in Istanbul often serves Turkish customers at the counter and family, suppliers or buyers back in Afghanistan through a phone. The identity has to feel right in both conversations without pretending to be something it is not. We design the pair together and keep the two scripts on equal terms.

  1. Turkish and Dari, neither as a translation

The Turkish version is written for a Turkish reader and the Dari version for an Afghan one, so neither looks like a line copied underneath. Weight and spacing are matched by eye rather than by formula.

  2. A shopfront that belongs to the street

A sign in Istanbul is read beside many others, in a language most passers-by know. We keep the mark clear from the pavement and let the Turkish name carry the first impression, with the rest supporting it.

  3. Ready for a phone and for an invoice

Files are prepared for an Instagram profile, a printed bill and a signboard, because all three are part of the same trade. The same artwork also works in a message sent back home.

What you get

  • Primary mark and bilingual lockups
  • Turkish and Dari versions
  • Profile, invoice and sign files
  • Simple usage notes
Do we need a Turkish name as well as our own?

Not always, but a Turkish reader should be able to say the name without difficulty. If the name stays as it is, we make the lettering carry that job clearly.

Can you work with a business that is only on Instagram?

Yes. In that case the profile picture, the grid and the invoice matter more than a large sign, and the set is prepared in that order.
